Falling in Love with the Roaring Game

I fell hard and fast for the sport of curling after playing in my first bonspiel. What’s not to love about it? The energy, the community, and the friendly competition pulled me right in, and I immediately started trying to get in as many games as I could!

While I was subbing on a friend’s team in one of my first years, we were lucky enough to score an 8-ender, and to celebrate that rare and unforgettable achievement I treated myself to a new high-end broom. That single upgrade was a lightbulb moment for me. I realized very quickly how much the right gear matters, not just for performance on the ice, but inspiring overall pride and motivating your best game.

From Passion to Design

That appreciation for gear took a fun, slightly ironic turn after my first experience playing with Team Sealand - a team that a group of friends formed years earlier. Let’s just say their main focus has always been more on the post-game party than the podium. Over the years, they had built a widely recognized (and somewhat notorious) identity in the curling community. After I joined them for the Kansas City BBQ Spiel and we pulled off a victory in the first event finals, I decided to lean into the bit. Mostly as a joke, I designed custom, highly professional broom heads for us so we could look like a serious "national" team. Even though that project started as a laugh, our gear definitely got noticed.

Seeing the impact of that one funny DIY project sparked something, and it gradually snowballed into the beginnings of SweepWear. As my time on the ice grew, so did the projects. I started designing the on-ice look and full uniforms for my own competitive squad. When we hit a massive milestone and qualified for the 5U World Championship, I stepped up to create a custom logo and branding to mark the occasion. Soon, I found myself brainstorming fun curling t-shirts and making custom jackets as Christmas gifts for my nieces and nephews to help encourage them as they picked up the sport.

SweepWear was born out of a simple desire to take the custom design work I was already doing for my own teams and offer it directly to my fellow curlers.
